7 Common Dog Training Collars

Choke Collars(also called choke chain, slip chain, slip collar):
The choke collar is a length of material (nylon, chain) with a circular ring on either end. The chain is slid through one of these rings to form a loop and is slid around the top of the dog's neck, just behind the ears. and rest's on its neck. When the dog displays an undesirable behavior a slight pull is used to alert the dog that it has done something undesirable. it is vital to note that improper use of this collar can result in injury and even death of the dog. There are three popular types of choke collars: the limited choke collar, the choke chain, and the snap-around.

Prong Collars (also called pinch collars):
The prong collar is made of a series of metal chain links with blunted open ends turned towards the dog's neck so that, when the collar is tightened, it pinches the loose skin around the dog's neck creating a nudging sensation on the dog's neck.

Electronic Collars:
Electronic collars are designed to discharge a shock, odor, or high pitched sound. Included in these types of collars are the Electronic Shock, Audio, and Citronella. These electronic collars are controlled mainly by remote. The shock collar sends an electronic shock to the dog's neck which is strong enough to be uncomfortable for the dog, but not physically harm him, when he displays undesirable conduct. The force of the shock can generally be changed from very slight to a more extreme sensation. The Citronella Collar sprays an odor that is foul to most dogs. The Audio Collar discharges a high pitched sound that humans can't hear...most dogs can and does not like it.

Martingale Collars:
The martingale collar is similar to the choke collar. The difference is the martingale collar has only a section on it that will tighten when pulled where as the choke collar will tighten with no fixed limit.

Clickers:
The clicker is a small plastic box with a metal strip inside that makes a "clicking" sound when the metal strip is pressed and released. Clicker is a type of training used to proper condition a dog to respond in a particular way and to mark a behavior that will be rewarded.

Head Halter:
The head collar (similar to a halter on a horse) in general consists of two loops. One loop goes behind the ears and the other goes over the dog's nose and they meet below the dog's jaw to help prevent the dog from pulling and straining. Head collars control the neck, head, and nose and the concept behind it is that if you have control of the head, you have control of the body. Head collars can be excellent for controlling even the strongest dogs.

No Pull Harness:
Unlike standard neck collars, which control a dog by attaching to the neck or head, the no-pull harness, as with any harness is worn on the body of the dog (usually at the shoulder blades) to teach it not to pull or tug, in a calm, pleasant manner. It makes it harder for the dog to pull while it is wearing the harness.
